The First Horror Film Ever Made

The First Horror Film Ever Made

Have you ever awakened at midnight after seeing a horror film? I think you must have. These days horror films are becoming increasingly popular. No one can deny the panicky effect that these films evoke.

Scary Costume

The history of horror films can be traced back to the early days of Gothic novels, stories of monsters, vampires and devils. Since the days of "Anglo-Saxon age", there were chivalric romances, stories of ghosts and demons. From then onwards, ghost and devils in weird shadowy shapes that leave an evil effect have been personified in horror films.

If you really like this genre you must be wondering "what is the name of the first horror film?" or "when was the first horror film made?" Let us go through the history of horror films to find the answer.

When was the first horror film made?

Hold your breath and let me answer this. It was a well-known French filmmaker Georges Melies, who made the first horror film. The film was titled as Le Manoir Du Diable (French for: The House of the Devil). It was released in 1896, on Christmas Eve, in Paris. It was a two-minute long film and contained many traditional pantomime elements. This film also depicts a haunted castle and manor of the devil.

Plot of the movie in brief:

The film begins with a bat flying into a medieval castle. The bat circles slowly and transforms into Mephistopheles. Preparing a cauldron, the demon produces skeletons, ghosts, and witches from its bubbling contents. Then, the demon conjures a young girl and some other supernatural elements. When one of these supernatural agents hold up a crucifix, the Satan vanishes immediately.

History of horror films:

The element of horror was initiated during the classic age of English literary history. Some of them are Gothic novels like Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, Phantom of the Opera and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Besides these, there were a sequence of Mummy films. If you want to know more, then read evolution of horror film.

After the Second World War, the devastation caused by war gave rise to three genres: the horror-of-personality films, the horror-of-Armageddon subgenre and the horror-of-the-demonic films.

However, during the age of modern and post-modernism, the element of sadistic horror and the supernatural ruled these films. Gore Verbinski’s "The Ring" released in 2002, can be named as one of the most effective horror films of the modern era. Steven Spielberg’s first notable film "Paranoiac Duel" (1972) casts a spell of sadistic horror. Here, we can mention William Malone’s "Fear Dotcom" (2002), and James Wan’s "Saw" (2004), sequels of which were released in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Recently, the film directors have introduced a new trend ‘chick flicks’, which have the element of traditional horror-adventure. For eg: Lions Gate’s awestricken and terrifying "The Descent" which was released in 2006. This film is regarded as the first chick flick and includes the element of female brutal action.

Thus, portraying the gloomy and forbidden side of life and death, these horror films evoke a mixed feeling of terror and fear blended with a feeling of pity for the protagonist. I hope you must have watched some horror movies. Have you seen "The Wizard Of Gore" by Jeremy Kasten, "Dracula 2000" by Patrick Lussier, "Halloween Night" by Mark Atkins? If not, then try to watch some of these.

Halloween Party Planning

Posted by admin on August 20th, 2009

If you’re planning that perfect Halloween Party, there are many resources you could use to help. Having held numerous parties, I decided to review what was available and if you’re planning a children’s halloween party, Halloween Help was really really helpful.

Halloween CostumesThe sky is darkening. You feel a chill and ghostly horrors in the air as the moon shines brightly on this cloudless night. It is the last night of October, October 31st. It is officially Halloween night and you have decided to have a hauntingly exciting Halloween party. How ghoulishly delightful! But where do you start in planning your Halloween holiday celebration. Here are 10 steps to help you in planning a great Halloween Party that will have all those ghosts, wicked witches and grim goblins screaming with delight.

Step 1: Halloween Party Kickoff: Think about who the party is for – for you or your children? An adult Halloween party will be quite different from a children’s Halloween party when it comes to planning the Halloween theme of the party, Halloween decorations, Halloween recipes and beverages. Adults and older children usually love to be frightened, but that is not the same for smaller children. So when planning your event keep the ages of your guests in mind. Once you have that figured out, now it is time to pick the date, time and place of your Halloween party. And don’t forget the guest list.

Step 2: Halloween invitations: This is where you can have fun and set the mood of your unforgettable night of horror chills and thrills by sending out unique and spookily inviting Halloween party invitations. You can purchase them or make some yourself with some construction paper and some glitter markers, or how about buying some inexpensive Halloween paper eye masks and writing the words on the back. Include all the important information such as date, time, place and a request for RSVP to your Halloween party.

Step 3: Halloween party food and recipes: now the party would not be a party without a lot of great Halloween munchies. Plan a menu and write out your shopping list. Try to do as much in advance as possible, and try to pick Halloween recipes that can be made ahead and stored or frozen. And again, think of the ages of your guests – there are a lot of fun Halloween foods for both kids and adults. Here might be the place to use up some of those Halloween pumpkin guts.

Halloween PumpkinsStep 4:Haunted Halloween Pumpkins: plan to buy your pumpkins early to get the best selection. By selecting a variety of shapes and sizes of pumpkins, you will be able to make a variety of interesting jack-o-lanterns ghosts. And don’t forget about those miniature pumpkins, they can make great party favors or Halloween decorations also. And the day before the party, carve your pumpkins and double check you have enough candles or use small flashlights to show off their ghostly grins.

Step 5: Halloween Costumes: there is always something exciting about putting on a Halloween costume and taking on another identity. So prepare yourself and your families Halloween party costumes in advance so that you don’t have to run around in a panic trying to put something together at the last minute. It is easy to find a lot of great Halloween costume ideas that will not cost a lot of money or time.

Step 6: Halloween Party Games or Activities: Halloween games and craft activities are especially popular for younger Halloween party guests, but this does not mean that adults would not enjoy the fun of Halloween games and showing off their ghostly talents. So think about what Halloween activities your guests would be interested in and gather all the materials you need in advance. Also be sure to have some extra Halloween activities incase a game that you are expecting to take 45 minutes only lasts for 20. And do not forget the Halloween prizes, these can be easily and inexpensively assembled by a quick trip to your local novelty or dollar store or ordered online to be delivered straight to your door.

Step 7: Halloween music and sounds: there is no time then the present to start thinking about what kind of Halloween music you want at your Halloween party celebration. Are you looking for some fun party songs for dancing music, or hauntingly spooky background ghost music for a dinner party, or a collection of sing-a-longs for the kids. Also, you might want to incorporate some Halloween special effects outside with spooky horror sounds as your guests walk up to the front door. There are a lot of special music tapes or CD’s available to purchase, or if your try making one on your own – it could be almost as much fun as the Halloween party itself.

Step 8:Halloween Party Favors: party favors add an extra treat of fun to any Halloween party and are a wonderful addition as a Halloween treat for each guest or something they can take home. They do not need to be elaborate Party Favors or costly and can range from a small plastic toy to a homemade individual bundle of snack mix wrapped in Halloween decoration style.

Step 9: Halloween Decorations: decorations for your front yard and house for Halloween can be a lot of fun and again does not need to be costly. You can get a lot of great eerie Halloween effects by experimenting with some horror lighting placed around your indoor and outdoor Halloween decorations. And adding in some Halloween music or ghost sounds can make some of your Halloween decorations come to life.

Step 10: Party Guests Arrival: today is the day – Halloween party Night, and your guests are about to arrive. Have a quick look around to see if all is in order and that your house is a safe setting. Keep a porch light on so everyone sees any steps or other obstacles, and make sure all your guests have a way back home after the Halloween festivities come to an end.

Final note: Remember that your Halloween party does not need to be elaborate, the main component of a great Halloween party are a few willing participants that want to have fun, a few simple Halloween decorations and props, toss in some spooky music and ghost sounds, and definitely the Halloween food – and you will have a smashingly and howling Halloween Party. So when the party starts, enjoy yourself! It will be a spookily great time.

Dracula – The Myth

Dracula – The Myth

Bram Stoker’s original version of Count Dracula’s life takes place in Transylvania, a region of Romania. A young solicitor, Jonathan Harker, is invited to Dracula’s castle to provide information and the contracts for the Count’s new acquisition, an estate in England. The story continues as Jonathan’s fiance and her childhood friend are pursued by the Count, becoming his victims as a now-returned Jonathan and his compatriots attempt to stop the reign of terror. While this original story has become the basis for several movies, a few cartoons, a children’s television show puppet, and on a very basic level the character on a box of kids’ cereal, does the character of Vlad Dracula have his origins in anything but his author’s mind? Ask almost anyone who has heard the literary version and you will get the same answer – absolutely yes. And some people think the fictional version is less evil and bloodthirsty than the real-life man that inspired the vampire tale.

Deeply seated in Romania’s past is the story of Vlad the Impaler, a Wallachian blueblood and one of the most controversial figures in the country’s history. Also known in Romanian records as Vlad Tepes or Vlad Dracula (which translates as ‘Son of the Dragon, referring to Vlad’s father’s title which was given to him in 1431 when he was accepted into the Order of the Dragon, an anti-Islamic knighthood), While of Wallachian blood, he and his family had been exiled to the region of Transylvania when they were ousted from rule by an opposing faction. After years of war with the Ottoman Empire, Vlad was placed as Prince of Wallachia, where he continually warred with invaders and opponents to his rule. Dying in 1476 at approximately 45 years old, he has left behind stories and images that continue to haunt the world.

Atrocities committed to memory and written down by German and Turkish warriors, as well as his captors during his relatively brief imprisonment in Turkey include torturing and killing small animals, nailing hats or other badges of office onto people’s bodies, and the mutilation of unfaithful or unchaste women. However, Dracula is most famous for his tendency to execute almost anyone who stood in his way, disagreed with him, cheated customers, or just generally didn’t fit his ideals by impaling them on stakes and leaving them on display. There are well-documented anecdotes of warring factions arriving at a town after Vlad the Impaler, only to find thousands of men, women, children, and even infants suspended on stakes – sometimes head-down, sometimes head-up – with Vlad’s soldiers feasting among them.

Tourists to modern-day Romania are often directed to Bran Castle on the historical border of Romania and Wallachia, where Vlad the Impaler was rumored to have lived (most likely it was where he was imprisoned for a few days as opposed to have resided); other sites in the region include a restaurant in Sighisoara which used to be a house where Vlad did in fact live for a time, and the citadel in the same city which offers a glimpse of living conditions in his era. While there is not much else still in existence to prove that Vlad Dracula was indeed the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s legend, one has only to speak to the Romanian people to know that the legend has soaked into their culture, as sure as his victim’s blood soaked into the ground so many years ago.
